One of the village beader has been patiently creating this wonderful piece in a couple months time with such a fabulous patient to hand strung the seed beads onto the whole surface of the rattan baskets. She was quit brave to play with those colors.

They have been pridefully playing with some color's combination in their works which came out to be fantastic pieces of art. New Design Offering baskets

These days we have been kept busy by working on some bamboo basket with a bit of beads and sea shell. We create the products for a client in the Netherlands, Moga Moga. Everyone has been so excited to work on the new design baskets where we all hope that they are going to get some good market as it would help the local basket weaver to keep having the work. It is completely different than our beaded baskets but it is wonderful to keep our beaders busy with some works during this slow time for our beaded baskets.

The bamboo baskets are woven at a small village around the region of Bangli by mostly women and it has been the side job for the local people for generation. The bamboo itself are nicely growing in this region with its tropical climate. We love to share with everyone of what we have been working on the last few weeks.

Jumbo Cupu

It has been a slow year of 2009 for our beading but we have been trying hard to survive during the hard year with not much of a sale for us. We tried to bead on and create a bit of beaded baskets and one of our beader has been patiently working on a Jumbo Cupu beaded basket over the last year and so proudly she has done with it. We are all very proud of the biggest basket that might have ever beaded on Bali. We well understand how patiently she did hand strung every single tiny bead onto the steady Jumbo Rattan baskets and we are proudly sharing the fabulous work of our beader to those who have patient about beadwork.

This Jumbo Cupu is 1 meter of height and about 60
cm of width and has taken about 8 months for the lady to finish the beading. We will write more on this Jumbo basket but we are just so impatient to share the work to everyone around the globe. We will be sharing more stories on this big pieces.

Slow time

It has been such a slow time for us as we do not have much order and we haven't been able to sell our works lately but we have to keep the works for all the beaders and again I ended up filling up my room with all the beautiful baskets. They are well kept in many boxes, sitting on our tables and shelf but they are beautiful there on their place until there will be market for them in the future.

It is a little nervous for us to have so many baskets in our stock and it is such a big invetment and keeping the work we indeed need some cash flow...

As you see, we have been trying to put advertising everywhere but let's see what's gonna bring us in the near future....

It is the daily activity at our workshop creating the beaded baskets, children are coming home after school and the young village's mothers are spending their free time after finishing the house works. The beading is also more like a socializing activity for everyone where they share jokes, stories and even gossip. I was born in Bali-Indonesia on December 28th, 1995 and right now is studying at the local secondary school which is around 3 kilometers from my home. I am spending my free time before school to bead to make extra money and also want to be creative in my spare time but of course my school homeworks in my priority but still there are plenty of time for me to bead. I go to school at noon as I am still at grade 1 of secondary. It is only the students of grade 2 and 3 that go to school in the morning. I would be using my couple hours free time in the morning to create the beaded baskets.

I am very happy to have an opportunity to have a part time job which is kind of hard here in my country as a student. I love being able to make some money by myself to help my parents who are only a traditonal farmer.

I was born on Monday, May 10th, 1971. I am married with kids and live in Bali-Indonesia. I am a housewife and having another small business opening a little shop that sells food and drink at the local school. I am having some free time while waiting for my shop when the school kids are back in the class room after breaks, so I would my free time at the shop to bead, making extra money for my family and my kid's education.

It is actually fun to hand strung the tiny seeds beads onto the rattan basket to loose my boring and lonely when the kids are back in the class. The school kids are the only customers that I have in my shop where they come to the shop when they have a hreak time to have little snacks.

KTK - Square Beaded Rattan

We are creating some square boxes in size of W = 8 Inches. H = 4 Inches. We are still using woven rattan baskets as our base. There have been quit a little difficulties for us to bead this shape of basket, especially when we hand strung the seeds beads around the square part, but we did a good job on it so we are all very proud of what we have created. The year 2007 has given us all so much good things and we would love to thank to everyone who have given their great concern and contribution to our works. We are so grateful that we have been able to present our works to everyone around the world, and may our creations have been a valuable collection to anyone who has collected our beaded baskets. We are wishing that we are going to continuously having your support in the future. We are looking forward to present more of our works in the New Year 2008.

We were celebrating farewell for the year 2007 by going out with the beaders today, December 30th to visit the Bali Zoo Park and Bali Bersalju (Snowy Bali). Everyone was having such a great time and they were enjoying the Fauna at the Zoo park and having a fabulous time and really full of fun at the Snow Park in Kuta. Well, of course we do not have snow in Bali naturally but they were having the snow park in Kuta where we could at least feel the cold of your winter and touching the snow. Everyone was too excited about it and didn’t feel how cold the room was. Kids were sliding down on the snow trail that they have designed in the room, enjoying the ice carving.

It was really a great outing for everyone and they are still talking about it and surely it is going to be a continuous topic for the next few weeks in our workshop.

Rattan Basket Weaving

It is my first woven small urn rattan basket.

It has been a long time that I have been willing to weave the rattan basket myself but it was really hard to find the raw material as they have to be imported from Borneo Island. I was very lucky to finally found a shop in Ubud that is specializing in selling rattan material. I was very happy to find them and now I can learn to weave my own baskets for the beading project. I have been learning to weave our own rattan baskets. It took me sometimes to figure out the way to weave the baskets from the finish baskets that we normally buying from a supplier in Lombok Island. It is going to be great to share it everyone in our village and hopefully that it is going to provide more works to the people in our village especially the farmers who have quit a lot of extra time after doing their works on the field. I have finished a couple baskets already and love to share them with everyone.

I hope that it is going to make it a lot easier for all to get stock for our woven baskets as we used to wait for a long time to have our baskets coming from Lombok. It has been really fun to do the weaving and figuring out my way around it. I am glad that I could do it now and have to practice more to get a better result for my woven baskets. I love to invite more people from my village to involve in weaving the baskets ourselves and I have got some good response from some elderly in the village that have a kind of hobby in weaving basketries. There are quit many young boys in our village who has no regular job and they mostly just hang around the village and doing nothing but it seems to be very hard to get them involve in the work. I have been trying to convince them that they have to do something that they could at the moment even trying something new to kill the free time. Many of them do not give any good response to my offer but I am going to keep trying to have them working. It is sad to see young people are wasting their time.

Well, again it is my dream to have people doing good and useful things for their life, not wasting the time.

My cousin Wayan Wartana and myself are weaving the rattan basket for the base of our beadwork.

All the boxes are ready for shipping.
Wayan is counting and checking all the baskets before packing them into the box. We put cutting paper to make sure that the baskets are well protected during the shipping.
Ni Wayan Nilayanti is cleaning up the baskets before wrapping them with bubble wrap. We make sure than all the basket has a tag and beader's name tag in it. we provide the profile of the beader, so our customer has an information of the artists who beaded the basket.
Ni Made Reti Miani and Ni Made Listiyawati are wrapping the basket with bubble wrap and preparing for the packing list.

The kids help me in packaging. I share with them to do a good packing for our works. We use bubble wraps to protect the beads from hitting each other, to minimize the possible damages that caused by the long journey that our works takes in shipping to the US and Europe.

Everyone is helping in packing some baskets for clients. We work hand in hand as a family.

There have been a few more kids who have joined us in our workshop over the last few days and they are all very excited to join the team and learning to bead from the older kids. Our home have been more alive when more kids who are coming home after school. It is wonderful to see how well motivated they all are. We hope that we are going to be able to keep the work available for all of them and having the opportunity to help all these children for a better life.

They are still studying at elementary school and they go to school at 7.30 am and finish at 12.00 PM, so after lunch and doing their necessary homeworks, they come to our home and beading together with other kids. It is nothing more beautiful in life than having so much loving kids at your home, it makes your world more alive and excited. I love them all very much.

Everyone has been so patient in completing all these baskets. The young mothers have been spending their free time after finishing all their houseworks and the kids participating after school.

Here are some of the black and white designs that we are working on lately. They are shaped in round tall baskets. It is quit easy to do this motif as we are just making a zig-zag lines and being repated but the dificulties are coming when we are working on the lid as we have to try to make the lines attched with the bottom part.

We have been trying to create more collection for Easter Eggs where we use the wood for the base. It is some kind of Balsa wood which is very light. We just hand strung the seed beads around it to cover up the whole surface with 2 drop peyote stitch technique. We are trying to create them I many different colors combination and different motifs on it to see the better works on them.

Here is what we have created so far and we are going to try to beads on other different media in trying to develop our beading skills. It is also giving some new excitement for everyone to try to do new stuff where they will not be boring with the same media of works all the time.

I have been very busy over the last 3 weeks in making preparation for my younger brother’s wedding on August 18th. It was a great ceremony and full of excitement for all of us here in our village. The ceremony I over and we back to bead now and have been busy with our team to create baskets to fill up some orders that we have got at the moment. It has been so exciting for all of us to have such a fabulous opportunity to provide people with our works. It gives us so much motivation in our creations.

I have been spending my free time after the wedding to bead some baskets as I haven’t done it for quit a while now and it is truly fun to have time to bead again and doing it together with my son and other children.

Dear Everyone,

We are very happy to share a great news of one of the girl in our team, Ni NyomanTinawati who has been back to Junior high school. We are sponsor her for going to Junior High School and now she is studying at SMP Negeri 4 Abiansemal at Bongkasa Village. She is so happy to be able to go to school after waiting for a year to have a chance to go to Junior high school and we are all praying that we are going to be able to fund for her to finish her for her Junior High school and more that we would love to send her to Senior High School in 3 years to come.

We love to acknowledge everyone on the web that education here in our country is indeed very expensive for many families. Tinawati comes from a farmers family and her parents are working for someone rice farm in Ubud, Bali and they share the harvest. Her parents are not making any regular cash income and will definitely never be able to send her to school. Just for information, she has to spend IDR. 1,550,ooo for the entrance fee which the descriptions are as follows; Building/Infrastructure Fee = IDR 650,000. ( It is the money that they use to build the infrastructure of the school like the building and probably also for the maintenance of the school buildings). IDR. 482,500 is for the Uniform. IDR. 40,000 for the writing books. IDR. 27,000 or the school ID Card and photograph. IDR. 12,000 for school Magazine. IDR . 37,500 for the Student Orientation fee. IDR. 300,000 is for a fee to get her in as she was too late to apply for the school.

Anyway, we are so happy to have her continuing her studies and making her dream comes true and wish that we can make more children's dreams coming true for the future, particularly whose coming from a poor family.

We thank you very much for anybody who have been so kind to help us to educate our children of Bali, the future generations of the planet.

I have been quit busy taking people around for tours around Bali so I haven’t got a chance to update our blog. We are all still keeping ourselves busy with our beading workshop and have created more works that we would love to let them go for the upcoming Christmas. We hope that people would consider them great for their Christmas Gift.

Kids have been busy with examination for their graduation and haven’t been around lately as we want them to give all their time for their studies. Our young mothers are still having lots of time to do the beading and they have been coming up with all these beautiful works.

School holiday will be coming soon and we are sure that we will come up with more works as kids will have more time to make their baskets.

New Pieces-Beaded Easter Eggs

We love to introduce our Easter Eggs that we have beaded on a medium of Balsa wood that grows locally in Bali. It is quit new to us as we normally do our beadworks on rattan woven basketries. The local farmers farm the trees for handicrafts industries for about 15 years now and they grow perfectly with our climates here in Taman Village. It is so easy for us to get the material in our village and we are very happy to try this new works and wish that it is going to have a place in everyone who loves about art and craft. We are so proud to share with you our Beaded Easter Eggs. We make them in size of 2.36 in diameter and the height of 3.15 inches. We know that we have to do a lot of test for this new media but it seems that it goes fine so far and it is much lighter than the rattan baskets. It was hard at first to bead them but we have figured out the way to do it and here is what we have created. We will be very happy to get any feedbacks, suggestions and advice on our new pieces. On December 29th, 2006, I was driving for Jeanne, her friend and daughter Eryn from the northern part of Bali. We drove through the central mountain heading down to Ubud and drove by our village Taman, and I was very happy to invite them to visit my home and showing them about our beaded baskets. We offered Eryn to try to hand strung the seed beads on to the basket and seemed that she was enjoying it. We hope that we can invite more people to join us in our workshop and it is lovely to be able to share it everyone who love craft.

I am sending you all my Special greetings from Taman, Bali. Well, it has been a while that I haven’t written anything here at least until today. I have been busy with my new venture, duck farming which has been totally fun and enjoyable. I am definitely enjoying myself waking up in the morning and leading my troops to the nearby rice paddies where I live. They love eating the left over rice from the recent harvesting and the farmers are so happy to have me bringing the ducks over as they help them to get the field being manure and clean all the weeds.

I got up at around 6 am, grab my morning coffee and heading to the rice paddies nearby our home to lead the ducks for getting free left over rice. I leave them on the field till the evening and pick them back up at around sunset and lead them back home to a little house on the back of our property where they sleep for the night.

Hi there, it is a miracle to me to have the opportunity to be involved in this new business venture where I can create work's opportunity to the local villagers. The local economy has been dropping down badly since the first Bali bombing in 2002 that create a lot of unemployment in Bali, life has been very difficult for the Balinese. It was totally a blessing when I got an email of someone from the US who was asking me to find the beaded baskets and so fortunate that I know that they are close to where I live so it was not that hard to find them. I was starting to take pictures to those local beaders and have found a lot of information from those guys. It is a great work and requires a lot of patient to create them and they do not make that much money from what they are creating even if they have to spend so much time to get them done. It is caused by the middle men who always make better money that the workers themselves.

I went and met those beader few times and asked the technique to bead the baskets as it seemed to be very interesting to know how to create these wonderful beaded basketry. I bought myself a couple small rattan basket and tried to bead them at home and I finally got my first basket in about 4 days but of course with lots of effort to get use to stitch every single seed bead on to the baskets. We are using the 2 drop peyote technique in creating the works. I was extremely excited when I got my first small beaded basket.

I jumped on a bigger one and tried to create butterfly pattern and not really great yet but quit satisfying to me as a beginner. I am also a tour driver/guide for Bali so I use only my free time to bead and you know that it is kind of very slow in getting my basket done. I am not sure when I would get my butterfly one finished and ready to enter the market, but one thing for sure you have to be very patient to wait for it to be finished.

Since I got a little knowledge on the beading technique and then I invited my neighbor to join me and tried to make them and they all very excited. I am happy to pay them more than what those beaders in the neighboring village earn. I could do this as I do not have to go through the middle guy. I market them myself to my clients and contacting all the people that I know to help me to market them so that I can support all these people and school children from my own village and my neighboring village.

Honestly, since I have paid them better and the news spread out the village and in a very short time, I got most of them wanted to work for me. Everyday, I got people come to my home asking for the job and it made me so exciting about what’s happening until I couldn’t realize that my small room mounted with beaded baskets. Wow….. What should I do? I can not take in everyone to work for me as my market is not that big yet, but I do want to help those guys to make something for their life, studies and family. Sometimes that it is so hard to be a good guy, right?

I do need help and support from everyone and wish that we all here can keep having the work and those children need good education, so let’s hand in hand help them out, keep them busy and keep their smile for a better world, a world of laugh and smile…

Our Workshop

Here are some photographs of our bead workers at our small home in the village of Taman. We live in a smal simple house surrounded by farms, it is a quiet and peaceful place to live. It is now becoming more alive with all the local school children being at home doing the work together. I love their smiles and jokes. I wish that everyone can be here with all of us, I am sure that it would be lots of fun.

In Southeast Asia and the South Pacific region, beaded jewelry has served as personal adornment, protective amulets, and political badges of rank, as well as dowries, ceremonial exchange goods, and sacred altar objects. The earliest beads in Southeast Asia were excavated from Neolithic caves in Borneo, and date from 2,500 to 1,000 BC Most of the hundreds of large and small islands in the South Pacific have been accessible to seaborne traders, and beads have been an important element in the region’s trade for thousands of years. Because of sea trade routes linking India, China, western Asia and Europe, the peoples of Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines were significantly influenced by these cultures. Other excavated sites contain beads of agate, carnelian, crystal and amethyst from India and Sri Lanka. Glass beads came from India during the 1st century AD, and Roman-style “eye beads” reached Southeast Asia in the early middle ages before the 12th century.

I used to work in an art shop in Ubud around 1980’s for a few years. Someday, on my way back home to my village on the west of Ubud, I passed by a shop that was selling especially beaded pieces and the one that attracted was a magnificent beaded basket. It was truly interested pieces and straight away I was into the piece. I encouraged myself to get some beads and a small basket to start learning to create this artwork. It took me many days to figure out the pattern on doing this artwork and was so happy with my progress day by day. You can imagine how happy I was when I could get my basket completely done and admired my works for days. After my first work, I have been happily doing basket by basket up to the present days.
I taught my husband and kids to do the beadworks like what I do. My husband is a temple priest and he hardly can be working away from our village like other men so he was so happy when I asked him to learn to bead. We have been passionately doing this work for around 20 years now. Our daughter is also falling in love in this work even if we never push her to do what we have been doing for 20 years. We have taught many people from our village to bead and there are many school children who are doing it to make extra money for their school. We are very happy to have a great opportunity to help others in our village and we love to invite everyone who loves this artwork to experience it with us. I could not continue my studies to Senior High school which was a bit disappointing but I am happy enough to have a choice to keep my work on beading. I have done many pieces over 8 years and happy to have people around the world to collect my art pieces.

Beading Experience: Well, for 5 years spending my time on beadworks is truly amazing. It was really so desperate to learn at first, as I couldn’t figure out the pattern and my way around this beadwork but I was not that easy to give up even it took me a week to really find my way to gather thousands seed beads to create a beautiful design. I can not tell how happy I was when I got my first piece and I couldn’t sleep at night without my first beaded basket. I am happy for myself not to give up but kept trying and trying. I think that we can make it happen if we want to and that is my motto,” Never give up “.

We strongly committed to help income people for generating livelihoods, by providing employment and income opportunities, and marketing their products. Welcome to Taman Village, Bali!

Welcome to our village, Taman. It is a small village that lies on the altitude of 300 m above sea level, inhabited by about 5,000 people and divided into 7 sub-villages. Most of the people are farmers where they grow rice, corn, peanut, cocoa, coconut and other tropical fruit trees are widely grown here in the village. Our village is very self-sufficient of foods as we grow most of our food supplies. It is our welcoming statue of Dewi Sri as the goddess of Rice in our Balinese Hindu Religion. We have the statue of Dewi Sri because our village is mainly living on farming. We pray the she always bless our crops and our soil with prosperity and fertility.

Ceremonies in Our village:
A hundred percent of our people are Balinese Hindu Dharma followers, and we have many festivals that we have all year around such as Village Temple festivals known as Odalan in the Balinese term and other Major Hindu festivals.

Daily offerings:

We make beautiful daily offerings that we place on our family temple everyday to worship the greatness of the Almighty God so that we always being blessed with peacefulness, harmonious and prosperity.

Rice Farm.

We are surrounded scenic rice paddies, a very peaceful and harmonious panorama that always give us a new energy to continue our daily routine with no stress. Our local farmers have been farming rice for hundreds of years and have been preserving the irrigation system for same period of time. With our great natural irrigation system, we can grow rice all year round. Our farmers have a great respect to natural resources such as water so ceremonies are always conducted periodically. Small shrine is built on their rice field where small beautiful offerings are placed on every Hindu’s holidays.

Fruits Farming

There are wide ranges of tropical fruits that we grow in our village such as Durian, Rambutan, Manggoesten, Pineapple, Mango, Snake Fruits, Papaya, Jack Fruit, Coconut, etc The soil is so fertile and the great tropical climate that we have here in Bali allow our fruits trees keep producing all year round but of course some of them are very seasonal.

Vanilla, Cocoa and Coffee farm.

We also grow lots of Vanilla, Coffee and Cocoa for chocolate in our village.

We welcome you to have a walk around our village to gain knowledge about our farming as well as learning about our local vegetations. We always open the door of our village for everyone to come and visit us and we will be so proud to have your visit to our village of Taman.

Handicrafts.

Besides farming, many of the people are working as craftsmen of wood carving, basket’s weaving and bead’s work. Starting from school children and adults are involved in the work of craftsmanship to support their life and in preserving the art itself to be passed down to the next generation. Patient and hard work are being a part of our daily life and are shown in the people artworks as a reflection of our religion and culture. Beautiful woven objects are made in everyday life like our beautiful daily offerings that is woven from a young coconut leaf. It is a way for us to express our sense of art and beauty and as a way to thank to the God for all the blessings that we have been accepting in our life.
